Google Street View

Google has an interesting feature called "Street View" that it has been rolling out in selected communities around the country. Using pictures captured with 360-cameras mounted on the top of cars, Google makes it possible to now not only view a map in standard and satellite formats, but also see exactly what the area looks like from the street.

Say hello to my office building:

Feel free to walk around my neighborhood. It's definitely safer to do it this way.

Here's my old building:

Wow! That's pretty neat. Will it do residential streets too, or just big city type places?

Street View has been implemented in two dozen or so communities around the country. Clicking on the Street View button when in Google Maps will show you (with purple roads) where you can use it.

I notice if you drop in on "Oakland," you are on 14th, within view of your office -- you must really be "downtown"!
Strangely, downtown Salem doesn't seem to offer the Street View. Must be a momentary glitch in the website. The Satellite View of our neighborhood has been updated to within a couple of years of the present, judging from the new home across the street, a new pool, etc. You'll never get much of a look at our house with so many trees obstructing the view.
